How about changing the register procedure in an effort to clamp down on bogus members?

I've seen boards having new members answering a question, i.e. "What does the abbreviation C.A.R.T. stand for?"

Don't know how difficult it is to install such feature, however it might save the moderators some time in the long run.
We'll look into it.

It's been pretty quiet lately, but this week has been terrible again. Every now and then there is a new surge of spammers and it's a case of waiting to see which ip's they use so i can block the range in the admin panel of the forum. This works well after a new wave has gone by, right now we're in the middle of one.
Whoa!
"What does the abbreviation C.A.R.T. stand for?"

Uhh? Forgot it...
And once again:
I am NOT a spammer!!!
Maybe Windows Vista is the b*stard and makes my computer so safe against viruses and spammers by making itself a spammer!?!?!?

Vista is a funky program because it doesn't allow some functions of old editing software...
how about giving me admin rights. That way I can get rid of those who are members and never made any contributions or posts to the sire, and are here for spam sake?

Remember I am 12 hours ahead of East Coast USA Time
Im too agree to have a security system against SPAMMERS because I hate them!!! And yesterday I had saw one!
Quite funny actually, the strong reactions on one user posting this mess. Considering that I delete on average 25 spamusers from the board I don't think you realize the amount of attack we are on under.
I do my friend ,just was wondering if you wanted another set of eyes on it. Did not take the guy yesterday very long at all to post about 8 times. There has got to be a way to make it a tad harder for spammers to gain access, get rid of those who are members and never made any contributions or posts to the site, and are here for spam sake?
Your offer to help out is much appreciated WoofGM. The thing is, these users are actually not humans but pretty advanced bots. There is already a CAPTCHA system in place for new users that they have no problem avoiding. The bot registers itself, confirms the e-mail (which is why e-mail confirmation is a joke anyway) and immediately starts posting their messages. It all happens faster than a human could do it too, I suppose. I know how these things work (sort of) because I made one myself not too long ago (albeit a very primitive one) to automate some repetitive tasks on my own servers. There's no way you can click and type faster than one of these things Wink2

One idea I had was to replace the forum's CAPTCHA, which is probably a widely used 'open source' one (but I have not checked yet) with a CAPTCHA that I made myself. Maybe an unknown captcha would be able to fool the bot. But I have not tested my own CAPTCHA with real users yet, so it might even fool them too Tongue

Another way to get rid of these problems completely is to give new users no posting rights until they have contacted an admin to prove they are a real human with good intentions. I could set this up this week if Wolf_PD (Power De-spammer?) agrees this would be a good way to go.
It is ok with me, but I will be offline for the better part of the next month, because I am in the US of A.

For you race enthousiasts, I decided to do a little reconnaisance on the Austin F1 track Tongue

I want to test your CAPTCHA as well. Nothing more fun than luring a computer into an error.
