tire compounds on ovals - what are you running?
#1
Normally, with the setups I see (on ovals - for full FUEL runs, not 1 lappers) tires are:

RF - Hard
RR - Medium
LR - Medium
LF - Soft

lately, I've been seeing that I do not get enough wear (or heat) to need a Hard tire on the right front.

For example, I am running at Indy right now and I was using a Hard RF tire. I saw temperatures maxing at about 193 in the corners, with a full fuel load. When the 40 gallon run was complete, my tire wear is showing "green" still with those low temperatures between about 170-190.

I switched to a Medium compound tire, and the temps went up to about 230-240 range. Tire wear is still good (either "yellow" or "green") at the end of a full 40 gallon fuel run.

I did see that this made the car grip much better in the front that now it feels pretty loose- especially if I have to make a maneuver in the middle of a corner, like lifting for traffic or any kind of reaction. I will need to re-balance the car

I just wanted to get others opinions on this, and what the findings are.

That's right.
On some tracks, there is the other extreme case, when the RF temp is too high. After I balanced the car there, I needed the soft compound for the LR.

Some (or even most?) of the Nascar 3 converted tracks have strange tire heat/ usage, sometimes you can use softs on all tires, sometimes even a hard tire overheats. If you are in the mood to tinker, you can try change the numbers in the following lines in the tracks .txt file:
THEAT, TCFF, TCFR, TIRES, TIRE2

I would start with copying those from a similar Papyrus track.

As for Indy, I remember using soft tires everywhere except the RF, which had medium. Though it was with the IIRS track txt file, which might or might not have different numbers than the one in the archives. I guess changing rear tires to softs will help in your case, too, it makes the balance closer to your original one.

Part of the problem (and I think this is on all tracks) is that there is too much difference between soft/medium/hard.

Each of the compounds needs to be made 'softer"

THEAT, TCFF, TCFR, TIRES, TIRE2 all need to be closer together too. When i switch to a hard RF it is simply staying too cool. It's like we need a compound between soft and medium

I think I'm going to work on this and let you guys know

So, I worked on the setup and made changes for the better. No need to modify the tire values in track.txt.

I am running MEDIUM tires on the right, and SOFT on the left. I was able to run completely flat in qualifying around all 4 corners at Indy '95 track. (232.3 mph)

My RF tire temperatures after a full 40 gallon run are between 225F on the straight, and peaking at about 242F in the corners. Tire wear is not a problem.

The car feels generally pretty good, especially at low fuel loads. The one thing I haven't been able to solve is that it doesn't feel.... consistent? Sometimes I get snap oversteer (that is difficult to catch) and sometimes it is just pushy.

Steering angle an issue? And maybe work on the rollbars?
